Spain 0 – 1 Northern Ireland

Being in a World Cup qualifying group featuring Sweden, Portugal and Scotland, getting to Spain in 1982 must’ve felt akin to putting a man on the moon for Norn Iron. Thanks to their own (non-Neil) Armstrong’s goal against Isreal in 1981, they made it as runners up. Gerry didn’t stop there, scoring against Honduras and this crowning glory moment. It’s one thing beating the hosts at a World Cup when you’re supposedly vastly inferior, it’s something else when you’ve done it with 10 players for the last half an hour. They ran out of luck in the bizarre second round, but this win was an undoubted highlight of the competition.
