Portugal 1 – 0 Netherlands

Valentin Ivanov is the key name to remember here. On paper, a one-nil win to either of these sides could be filed under ‘unremarkable’ given that they’re were very similar teams with very good players. But what ensued was almost beyond comprehension. 16 yellow cards and four red over the course of two-ish hours means you’ve just witnessed true greatness unfold. Ivanov reached the mandatory retirement age at the end of the 2006 World Cup, so never officiated again. What a swansong. His legacy lives on.
