By the time we got to the late 2010s, the Premier League dynasties of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea were largely a thing of the past and it was time for these two to morph into the teams to beat. Though early days in Jürgen Klopp’s tenure, the team he assembled to win the league in 2020 was in force in 2017; Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané to name but three. And it wasn’t a good day for the latter. Unsurprisingly, the entanglement between Ederson and Mané was labelled monstrous by the blues and accidental by the reds. In a pre-VAR landscape, the ref knows all. Still, 5-0 is a bit of a beating, even with one player less.
