Ok, yes. On one hand you could say England got an easy draw. But you can only beat what’s in front of you, can’t you? Any England fan probably would’ve been happy with the quarter finals, especially after 2014 and also the banishing of some penalty demons in the round of 16 against the Colombians. But the semis? They couldn’t, could they?! Of course they couldn’t. After a blistering start, the Croatian midfield maestros – Modrić, Rakitić and Perišić – started to take a stranglehold on the game and Mario Mandžukić’s winner in the first half of extra time kind of felt inevitable. Let’s be honest, they would’ve been completely shredded in the final anyway.
