Aberdeen 2 – 1 Real Madrid

At this point in time, Real Madrid had won the European Cup five times and Aberdeen had won, well, nothing. In a European sense. Obviously you had to be successful domestically to even get into this competition and it was the beginning of a long, long managerial career for Alex Ferguson. Even with a starting XI boasting players that would go onto become household names – Alex McLeish, Jim Leighton, Gordon Strachan, for example – no sane person would’ve bet against Los Blancos. Especially considering they played one less game to get to the final. The Dons not only claimed this cup but also the European Super Cup in Decmeber as well.
